Info: Hackmanite is a rare, UV-reactive mineral belonging to the Sodalite family. Currently, much of the mineral is being sourced from Pakistan, Afghanistan and India. It is normally formed in low-silica and alkaline lava flows. Hackmanite is known for its ability to change color in both sunlight and black light exposure. Hackmanite has been reported to show “an afterglow of several seconds” or “prolonged afterglow”. The afterglow is called phosphorescence by mineralogists, but the official term is persistent luminescence (PeL). Persistent luminescence (PeL) can persist for up to hours. In Hackmanite, PeL is not present in every natural specimen. Hackmanite is not water safe and great care should be taken when cleaning your specimen.
