Info: Hematite is one of the most abundant stones on the earth. It is primarily made up of Iron, however, natural Hematite should have very little, to no magnetism at all. The makeup of man-made magnetic Hematite is actually chemically different from natural Hematite. Production of reconstituted Hematite has created a benchmark that Hematite should be magnetic but this is actually not the case. The name Hematite comes from the Greek word “haimatitis”, which means “blood red”. The meaning of its name is due to the fact that it is commonly a deep red color, which closely resembles the color of blood. Its color may also be grayish-black, brownish, orange-red or have a silvery metallic lustre. Many people associate Hematite with the silvery-grey colored beads and palm stones, which are made from powdered Hematite and reconstituted back into a “stone” or “bead”. This is actually “man-made” Hematite. Natural Hematite in quartz crystal has various names given to it such as the following. “Fire Quartz” and “Hematoid Quartz” are commonly a deeper red colour that is within Clear Quartz. The name Ferruginous Quartz may also be used to refer to a piece of quartz that contains a good concentration of either Hematite or Limonite. Harlequin Quartz refers to crystals that have red and purple specs or strings of Hematite within. Hematite Amethyst often has a thick top red cap of Hematite which gives it its value. It is often the same with Thunder Bay Amethyst. Hematite can also be found in or on Auralite 23 and Super 7 crystals. Hematite has a low toxicity for iron and can be soluble in acids. Due to the iron content, water should be avoided.
