Info: Hemimorphite is a very rare mineral and is a component of calamine (yes, the same lotion your mom used to treat your swimmer’s itch). It is a mineral that has been mined with zinc and lead ores, associated with Smithsonite. They were assumed to be the same mineral and both were classed under the same name of calamine. The silicate was the rarer of the two and was named hemimorphite, because of the unique way it develops its crystals. Hemimorphite is a unique mineral, receiving its name from the Greek “hemi”(half) and “morph”(shape). Hemimorphite forms with different crystal terminations on each side of a single crystal. Although this is very common for Hemimorphite crystals, you are usually unable to see one side of the termination at all times as it is hidden within the matrix. Hemimorphite can come in an array of colors but is most commonly seen in a white to pale blue when available for purchase at your local shop. Crystals on Hemimorphite specimens could appear in all different shapes such as flattened, prismatic, tabular, bladed, radiating, acicular, coxcomb, rosettes, and drusy. The most commonly found shape for Hemimorphite is in a globular form such as botryoidal.
