Info: Labradorite was first discovered in Labrador, Canada in the late 1700’s and was named according to the find. Since then, deposits have been found worldwide. According to some websites, their mention of the Inuit legend of the northern lights being freed from Labradorite, however solid documentation to back the connection between the Labradorite stone and this legend has not been found and this legend cannot be confirmed. Labradorite is classified as a plagioclase and “calcium sodium” feldspar. Moonstone is also an orthoclase however it is a “potassium sodium” feldspar. This is why moonstone and labradorite are “sister” stones. They are in the same family (feldspar) but are classed differently. Labradorite has also gone by the name Spectrolite. Labradorite is water safe but submerging Labradorite in water for extended periods of time should be avoided.
