Info: Ocean Jasper is a trade name for a multi-colored stone from one specific location in Madagascar. Although commonly described as an orbicular jasper, the most recent research suggests it contains the mineral chalcedony. Some pieces have agate banding or druses of clear quartz, a coating of tiny crystals, known more commonly as “druzy”. Ocean Jasper is a variety of Jasper that contains multi-colored orbs or spherical inclusions or zones. This is in highly silicified rhyolite, quartz and feldspar crystallize which provide the basis or seed for the orbicular structure seen in this kind of jasper. Not all orbicular Jasper is Ocean Jasper but all true vein Ocean Jasper has orbicular formations. As much of the multi-colored jasper on the market has been previously sold as “Ocean Jasper”, the trade name for unofficial Ocean Jasper is moving to Sea Jasper. Ocean Jasper and Sea Jasper are both water friendly but to retain integrity, should not be left submerged in water for extended periods.
