Info: Onyx primarily refers to the parallel banded variety of mineral chalcedony. Agate and onyx are both types of chalcedony that are different only in the band formation, as Agate has curved bands and Onyx have straighter, parallel bands. The colors of its bands range from black to almost every color. The Onyx trade name has been used to label other banded materials, such as banded Calcite, however, this material is much softer than true onyx, and much more readily available. True Onyx will be water safe but Calcite Onyx will not be, so it is important to know what type of “Onyx” you have before cleaning or submerging in water.
