Info: Opal is different from all other gems and minerals in that it’s not a crystal and has no exact color. It’s an amorphous or poorly crystallized silica that contains water. The water content of an opal can be an important factor in its quality and appearance. An opal exposed to heat can dry and lose its appearance however, when exposed to water, some opals can rehydrate. Unlike crystalline gems forming clusters, opals are formed in the crevices of the rock, meaning they end up forming within the host rock. This explains the complex shapes taken by opals released from their rock matrix (Rhyolite) or Opals being sold within their matrix. Mexico is the main producer of Fire opal, found in volcanic areas of the country. They also produce common Opals and Noble Opals. Australia is the next largest Opal producer. Opal is water safe but is extremely sensitive to temperature changes and care should be taken when worn as jewelry, especially when exposed to water temperature fluctuations as damage can occur.
