Info: Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral that is more commonly referred to as the “love stone”. Not to be confused with banded pink agate, Rhodochrosite belongs to the calcite group of minerals. In its (rare) pure form, it is typically a rose-red color, but impure specimens can be shades of pink to pale brown with light white marbling and in some cases, can almost be mistaken for edible bacon. Its Mohs hardness varies between 3.5 and 4. With Rhodochrosite, the deeper the color, the more desirable the stone, but it always comes down to personal preference. I find many are drawn to its unique marbling and stunning orbicular patterns no matter what the shade or color! When Rhodochrosite is exposed to the atmosphere, it may develop a thin film of manganese oxide and slightly darken on its surface, which is normal. It is NOT water safe for extended periods of time.
