Info: Tourmaline is a black, ridged, crystalline boron silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminium, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Tourmaline is classified as a semi-precious stone. This gemstone can be found in a wide variety of colors. The most common type of tourmaline is black and is called “Schorl”. Schorl makes up 95% or more of all tourmaline in nature. The early history of the mineral schorl shows that the name “schorl” was in use prior to 1400 because a village known then by name as “Schorl” had a nearby tin mine where, in addition to cassiterite, black tourmaline was found. The new, black mineral find was named after the village. One of Tourmaline’s most distinguishing properties is its ability to become electrically charged just from heating or rubbing. When charged, one end becomes positive and the other negative just like a battery. Tourmaline is not water safe due to its Iron elements. Small amounts of water may be fine, however, you may notice an increase in rust formation over time on a lesser quality specimen.
